wanted to report on the annual warm water cove park garden spring cleaning, which took place on january 22, a couple of weeks ago. as you probably recall, that was a collaboration between the green trust san francisco and port maintenance. a coordinated a wild flowers seating event -- seeding event. my thanks to everyone in maintenance, and particular, to our gardens staff and especially rachel and dan, who helped on the day of the event. our neighbor helped by painting up some graffiti on their fins building, and they have been doing that now for a couple of years. and trans bay cable, our tenant, took down their fencing and cleaned up along their property line, which was very helpful. donations were received from many. recology donated compost soil. is in a cafe donated coffee. transbay cable donated funds for the purchase of native plants. for our kraft garden center donated end of season native and drought-tolerant plants, whatever those are, and mr. and mrs. miscellaneous ice-cream donated free ice-cream for all that showed up. it was a terrific event. we see some thank you notes from

we have been operating in the past two years with new vigor, with new vision, and with a new focus on paying attention to the needs particularly of all the returning veterans coming back from deployments and coming back from our overseas commitments right now. so we have initiated under president varni this year a new group of goals. in particular, our biggest goal is to work in the high rate of unemployment among veterans, particularly younger veterans returning to the city. this report relates to homelessness as well because we have learned, for example, statistically that we are -- vietnam veterans, like myself, the spiral time between returning from vietnam and winding up on the streets, for those who became homeless, was approximately 10 years. it was approximately a 10-year decline. there have been recent statistics to show that that spiral time for recently returned veterans can be as little as seven months. seven months from return to deployment homeless on the street. so employment is a huge factor in preventing this further downward spiral. so we have initiated a program whe

the good news is on arrests, we are way up. robberies at this time last year, we made 22 robbery arrests. this year to date, we have made 46 robbery arrests. over double the amount. aggravated assaults, 72 this year as opposed to 61 last year. and on and on. uc the stats. we're pretty much up in every category on arrests. in total violent crime, arrests were up 42%, and we are up 11% on property crime arrests. the total of arrests, we are up 25%, in the same time from his last year. this is more arrests, less crime, less officers. so we are real happy with the results. moving on to what everyone is interested in, the gang violence we have experienced. i took command of the mission district in november, 2009, and for approximately a year we had no gang violence. november 2 of last year, on the 2800 block of harrison street, we had a victim shot in the foot by an unknown suspect, which was gang-related. later that day, 16th and mission, we had somebody shot in the back. his statement was, "i don't like cops, i am not going to tal
